Bring Hope to Drought-Affected Families

By Othieno Gerald | Project Leader

For many households in Karamoja, prolonged drought has transformed ordinary daily responsibilities into difficult struggles for survival. Families that once depended on their harvests to sustain them now face uncertainty as crops fail, food supplies shrink, and household resources become increasingly strained. For pastoralist communities, declining water and pasture availability can add further pressure to already fragile livelihoods.

These challenges can leave families with few options when they need to purchase food. Children, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and households with limited incomes are particularly vulnerable when sufficient nutritious food becomes inaccessible.

The September 2026 IPC assessment estimated that approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja were experiencing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse. This is a powerful reminder that drought is not only an environmental challenge; it can also become a serious humanitarian emergency.

The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is appealing to donors, businesses, philanthropic institutions, and development partners to help raise awareness and strengthen support for vulnerable communities.

Through GlobalGiving, we invite supporters to contribute to appropriate initiatives addressing immediate food needs and promoting longer-term resilience to drought.

Behind every statistic is a family hoping for a better tomorrow. Let us respond with compassion, practical support, and solidarity. Together, we can help bring renewed hope to drought-affected families across Karamoja.
