For a mother facing hunger, few experiences are more painful than watching her children ask for food she cannot afford to provide. Across Karamoja, prolonged drought and repeated crop failures are making life increasingly difficult for households that depend on farming and livestock. As food supplies diminish and market prices strain limited incomes, mothers are often left struggling to meet their children's nutritional needs.
The hunger crisis is not simply about the availability of food. It is also about whether families have the resources to obtain it. When household earnings decline and food becomes more expensive, caregivers may be forced to reduce meal portions or compromise the variety of foods available to their families.
The September 2026 IPC assessment estimated that approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja were experiencing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse. This situation underscores the importance of strengthening assistance for vulnerable households, especially those caring for young children.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) appeals to donors, businesses, humanitarian partners, and compassionate people around the world to help raise awareness and mobilize support for appropriate relief initiatives.
Through GlobalGiving, your support can contribute to collective efforts to address food insecurity and improve access to essential assistance.
Every mother deserves the means to nourish her children with dignity. Stand with the families of Karamoja and help turn compassion into meaningful action against hunger.
