Karamoja is facing a serious hunger emergency that threatens the well-being of families and the future of an entire generation. Prolonged drought, inadequate rainfall, and repeated crop failures have weakened the livelihoods of farming and pastoralist households, leaving many families struggling to secure sufficient food. For parents who depend on seasonal harvests, the loss of crops can mean months of uncertainty about where the next meal will come from.
According to the September 2026 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) assessment, approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja were experiencing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse. This figure illustrates the scale of the humanitarian challenge facing communities already affected by poverty and limited resources.
When hunger persists, children face increased risks of inadequate nutrition, illness, and disrupted education. Families also find it harder to rebuild their livelihoods when limited income must be spent on increasingly expensive food.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is calling on donors, humanitarian organizations, businesses, and compassionate individuals to help bring this emergency to the attention of the international community.
Through GlobalGiving, we invite supporters to help mobilize resources for appropriate food assistance, nutrition interventions, and drought-resilience initiatives.
Karamoja's future should not be determined by failed rains and empty food stores. Stand with GIFU and help vulnerable families work toward a future where children can grow, communities can recover, and hunger no longer threatens their hopes.
