For many children in Puerto Rico, a hot meal at our Clubs means more than food-it means stability, care, and hope. Economic hardship and hurricane season can make it difficult for families to keep food on the table. For some participants, the meal they receive at the Club may be the last full meal of their day. Last year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico served more than 155,000 free meals and snacks.
7 out of 10 participants of Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico live in poverty. One of the most visible effects of poverty is the lack of access to nutritious food, making it more difficult for students to eat adequately at home and focus on overcoming the academic gap.
The Food Program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico served over 155,000 meals and snacks at no cost to families last year. We want to keep offering food alternatives so that none of our participants go to bed hungry. This program serves one hot and nutritious meal every day between 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to every children, and youth that attends our 11 after-school service centers. For some of our participants, this is the last meal of the day.
This program aims to promote the well-being of our participants providing balanced meals and healthy snacks to children who need them most - every school day, and even during the summer.
