It Takes A Village

By Mary Lou Hofmann | CAA Board of Directors

Recently we became aware of a family of 5 young children ages 13-3 in our area who were desperately struggling with Life. Their mother who was a drug addict was incarcerated as was one of the fathers and another father has passed away. As a result, they did not have a stable place to call home and to add to their troubles, some of the children were being harassed by some unsavory friends of one of the fathers. Fortunately, a young, 21- year-old relative agreed to take them in. However, because the young woman was not their legal guardian, access to social service government assistance services for the children was delayed and they were in desperate circumstances. A teacher at the school the children should have been attending, was aware of the situation and contacted Arbol de Esperanza, a local non-profit that CAA works with. Even though the family was not part of Arbol’s program, they were able to provide the necessary uniforms, shoes and school supplies which are required for children to be able to attend public school in Costa Rica. Because CAA makes a monthly financial contribution to Arbol for food support for their clients in need, Arbol contacted us to see if we would be able to help with food for the family.  Working with CAA’s Education Scholarship program’s social worker intern and a local grocery store, we were able to configure and deliver to the family two months’ worth of shelf-stable grocery items, fruits and vegetables, and household items to support them until the government assistance for the children would become available.

It is because of the ongoing generosity of our members and friends to our food support program that we were able help this family in desperate need.  It does, indeed, take a village; and we offer our sincerest thanks for your commitment and support.
