Food Assistance for Cancer Survivors

By Mary Lou Hofmann | CAA Board of Directors

FuncaVida is nonprofit organization committed to improving the quality of life and life expectancy of cancer patients and their families through programs and projects focused on comprehensive well-being, social and vocational reintegration, and multidisciplinary therapies.

As a result of the generosity of our members and friends, CAA is able to provide monthly financial support to FuncaVida which they use to provide food support to their clients and their families who have been impacted by cancer.   Loss of income due to an inability to work, lack of energy to shop or prepare meals, or the need for specialized diets are some of the nutrition-related challenges FuncaVida’s clients face as they strive to navigate the treatment and recovery process of their cancer journey.

Recently CAA had the good fortune to receive a special, one-time financial award from the local Employee Volunteer Committee of an international company to help us make a difference in our community. As a result of this donation, CAA was able to provide FuncaVida with additional funding to support the well-being of their clients and their families.  Part of the funding was used to provide food packages to 11 cancer survivors. This support not only helped them meet their basic nutritional needs but also had a positive effect on their overall well-being. Reducing food insecurity helps ease financial stress and allows recipients to focus on their physical and emotional recovery. Another portion of the extra funding was used to offer scholarships to 20 individuals to participate in a therapeutic gathering with healthful and nutritious snacks provided. During the event, participants took part in group dynamics and recreation activities designed to improve their physical and emotional health, as well as wellness exercises that fostered connection and healing.

Some of those who received help expressed their gratitude and appreciation for what CAA’s and FuncaVida’s support means to them.

“The food is a blessing to me, a way to save, a huge help—because many times, I simply cannot afford food. It multiplies for me. Every time I participate in a FUNCAVIDA activity, it helps me de-stress, I feel useful, it gives me energy, and I’m able to connect with others. I thank God for everyone who supports us at FUNCAVIDA.”

“The food I receive helps me and also allows me to support my family. It’s a very important form of assistance during such a difficult time. Every program offered by the foundation is unique. I’ve been able to recover physically and emotionally.”

We are deeply grateful for the support from CAA members and friends which allows us to help bring hope, relief, and well-being to those who need it most. Many thanks for your generosity.
