A highlight in 2008 involved the re-introduction of five of CCF's cheetahs into the NamibRand Nature Reserve in the southwest of Namibia, where, when it was farmland, cheetahs had been eradicated in previous decades. These five males had been in captivity long enough that they had to relearn to hunt and kill. It took several weeks (with CCF staff providing them food until they could provide their own), but eventually they became proficient hunters. To encourage the males to stay in the reserve, two female cheetahs from CCF were also taken to the Reserve and placed in the 50-ha holding camp. Additionally, a wild mother with three nearly grown cubs was released into NamibRand. All are adapting very well, and the cubs have now left their mother to lead independent lives.
