Pupils are returning to our partner schools this week for the start of the 2024 academic year and what will be the ninth consecutive year that every one of them will receive a guaranteed daily lunchtime meal through our 'Feeding Minds' programme.
With the school calender returning to its traditional schedule and duration for the first time since the onset of the Covid pandemic in 2020 this will equate to around 540,000 meals across 36 weeks of term-time between now and the end of October.
After a year of record high prices in 2023 following a long drought and a succession of poor harvests over the last 2-3 years we are relieved that nationwide heavy and prolonged rains in recent months have led to improvements in the supply of maize and beans and a drop in the price of both. Unfortunately this has been partially offset by an increase in the price of rice (which is imported) due to the current weakness of the Kenyan shilling.
On the whole though we expect the programme to cost us much less than the nearly £62,500 that we spent last year and thanks to prudent management of our resources and to those who support this activity on an on-going basis we begin the year in the knowledge that we already have the funds set aside or pledged to pay for food for the whole year!
