The first few months of 2026 have been a quietly busy season here at The Soup Bowl. With the ongoing economic challenges in Sri Lanka, daily life remains an uphill climb for many of our neighbors. Yet, amid the hardship, we continue to see so much kindness. Thanks to your steady support, we have been able to simply keep showing up—offering a warm meal, a listening ear, and a safe place to gather.
Here is a brief look at how your giving has translated into daily life over the last three months:
Supporting Students During the Week: Keeping children nourished is a vital part of what we do. Every Monday, we are able to provide 70 lunches to the young students at Sivananda Primary School in Hanthana. We also have the privilege of supporting Sumaga, a school for children with special needs in Dehiwala, with regular meals during the week. It is a small but practical way to help these children focus on their days instead of their hunger.
Wednesday Community Lunch: Every Wednesday at the Lighthouse Church in Kandy, a home-cooked rice and curry lunch is shared with about 150 people. It is a modest gathering, but for many of the elderly and unhoused folks who join us, it provides a vital chance to sit down, chat, and rest for a little while without worrying about their next meal.
Thursday School Lunches: At Sivananda Maha Vidyalaya Upper School, 80 students receive a nutritious meal each Thursday. Teachers have gently noted that attendance is steadier when the children know a good lunch is waiting for them.
Saturday Outreach: On weekends, we pack up 80 lunches and drop them off for elderly neighbors and families in rural Kandy who find it difficult to travel to our drop-in center.
The early part of this year brought unexpected challenges with Cyclone Ditwah. Our focus temporarily shifted to helping our neighbors in the hardest-hit areas get back on their feet.
Community Kitchens: In places like Palle Deltota, we provided bulk dry rations. It was incredibly moving to watch the villagers pool these resources, cooking together and looking out for one another in the aftermath of the storm. They did the hard work of rebuilding and caring for each other; we were just glad to provide the ingredients.
Back to School: Disasters place a heavy financial strain on families. To ease the burden on parents trying to get their children back to school, we handed out 797 basic stationery kits across the affected areas. It was a simple gesture, but it meant one less thing for these families to worry about during a stressful time.
At The Soup Bowl, the work we do is very simple, but we know it matters deeply to the people we sit with each week. We are just the facilitators—it is your generosity that actually fills the plates, buys the school supplies, and keeps this community going.
Thank you for caring about our neighbors in Sri Lanka, and for quietly standing beside us.
With sincere gratitude,
The Soup Bowl Team
