2024 is likely to be our busiest year out of the 39 years we have served our wild and human communities.
While development continues to threaten wildlife habitat, and increased use of chemicals adds to the many natural hazards wild species face, the wild ones are flourishing in spite of these obstacles, which is why we admitted more orphaned squirrels this spring than ever before.
26 of the 130 squirrel orphans that came into care were orphaned because mothers made nests in engine compartments of vehicles, and the nests weren't discovered until after the vehicles were moved - leaving mother and babies separated. Why did the mother squirrels choose this place to nest? Because there were no trees available.
As of August 31, we have already provided care for 1500 individuals this year. In addition to all the orphaned and injured squirrels admitted, we also provided care for another 100 species: from house sparrows to bald eagles - and tiny newborn meadow voles to beaver.
We are honored to serve, and were humbled to be nominated by Charity Navigator for Community Choice Nonprofit for 2024 - one of fewer than 50 medium sized nonprofits nominated out of 1.8 million organizations nationwide - and we won! Fellow Mortals is officially one of four Charity Navigator Community Choice Nonprofits for 2024.
None of our work, or this recognition, would be possible without the support of our faithful donors, so if you're part of Team Hope, supporting us monthly, or donate when you can -- THANK YOU!
