"Better a day of freedom -- than a lifetime in a cage."
This statement, made by Fellow Mortals' co-founder, Steve Blane, addresses the need of the wild ones to be part of the wild, to regain their freedom after time in care.
While it can be easy to become attached to our patients, from the time a wild one is first in our hands we acknowledge that only one thing matters to them: to escape our care and return home.
Wildlife rehablitation is the temporary care of injured and orphaned wildlife. Our work is not to keep them safe forever, but to give them the opportunity to make their own choices and continue to live the life interrupted by tragedy.
On this day so important to Americans, we celebrate the privilege of freedom for all living beings, including the wild ones.
We hope you have a safe holiday weekend.
