As we all know, the pandemic hit the least developed countries the hardest. In Argentina, we are facing a hard reality: 56.3% of the kids and adolescents are living under the poverty line, forcing many of them to start working early, this being one of the main reasons that prevent them from finishing school. Care tasks, lack of connectivity, and technology access are also reasons that contribute to school dropout. 1 out of every 2 young people fails to obtain a high school diploma in regular education; in vulnerable populations, the problem rises to 7 out of every 10.
In Argentina, the 2021 school year is closing and fortunately the students were able to return to the classroom. This made it possible for the tutors of our program to meet again with the scholarship recipients, who this year number 2186 students. Our efforts are currently focused on enabling them to take all their subjects and pass the year. Likewise, we have created a new specific support program for those students who owe subjects from 2020 so that they can regularize their school situation.
Our compromise enables that 75% of the graduates accompanied by Cimientos continue studying and/or working. During these two difficult years, your contributions made it possible for 61% of the students we support to complete the year without failing any subject and for 63% of those in their last year to obtain their high school diploma.
We know that we have a great challenge ahead of us, but we are confident in our 25-year track record and the enormous and kind support of our donors. We are very grateful for your support and hope to count on you for the next school year.
We wish you happy holidays and a prosperous new year.
