In our community, 7 out of 10 schoolgirls miss class each month because they cannot afford sanitary pads. They use rags, leaves, or paper which are unhygienic and unsafe. A local survey found 65% of girls miss up to 5 school days monthly, falling behind in their studies. This is an urgent health and education crisis. Providing a year's supply of disposable pads and health education for 10,000 girls in rural Nigeria will keep them in school, healthy, and learning with dignity.
Without access to proper pads, girls are forced to miss school. They stay home during their period to avoid embarrassment and shame. Using unsanitary materials like old cloth can cause infections and health problems. Many girls fall behind in their lessons and some leave school altogether. This barrier steals their education and limits their future.
This project will purchase and distribute a 12 month supply of safe, disposable sanitary pads to 10,000 schoolgirls. Each girl will receive a private, regular supply. We will also conduct school based health talks to teach girls about their bodies and break the silence around menstruation, reducing stigma and shame.
Consistent school attendance will help girls improve their grades and complete their education. With a full education, they will have more opportunities for work and independence. Better health knowledge will protect them from infection. Breaking the cycle of shame helps girls participate in class with confidence, shaping a generation that values women's health and education.
