We are happy to report back on Fishan, the survivor.
Fishan recovered so well after his accident, not only because of the excellent medical attention our team and experts were able to provide for him but also because of the help and encouragement that his herd gave, and continues to give him.
Fishan’s maturity surpasses his years. He may not be the dominant bull. At third position in the hierarchy among the bulls, he is not the strongest physically, but he makes up for this in his character and behaviour, his confidence in standing his ground, and standing up for himself, and for others that he cares about.
Fishan continues to teach us about perseverance, showing up for family, and being there to help, guide, and protect where needed. He is an exemplary herd member. Fishan has extended his support to the newest orphan calf in the herd, little bull Phabeni, who has been seen following after Fishan on long single-track trails through the bush. Fishan is often at the back of the herd when on the move, and Phabeni’s tiny legs are equally slow at keeping up with the gentle giants. Phabeni will find a fatherly figure in the older bull and in time learn a lot from him, just as the other orphans have.
It is winter in South Africa, and although Hoedspruit is in the northern and warmer part of the country, Fishan still feels the cold. Wintertime sees very low evening and morning temperatures in the bush, and as with humans, this makes Fishan much stiffer and more prone to pain. We help him through anti-inflammatory and pain-alleviating medication during these icy months. We monitor him closely to ensure he is coping on his walks with the herd each day.
