Food Security through Irrigation Farming in Malawi

Contributions received via GlobalGiving allowed Waqful Waqifin to provide 12 Malawian farmers with agricultural aid. The farmers, from the Matabwa Irrigation Scheme in Chikwawa District, received the following items:

• 2kgs of early maturing maize seeds;
• 1kg bean seeds;
• 10g onion seeds;
• 10g rape leaf seeds;
• 10g mustard leaf seeds;
• 10 tomato seeds;
• 1 litre liquid fertilizer; and
• 200ml pesticide.

The aid was greatly appreciated as it came during the period when numerous farmers from the Southern and Eastern regions of Malawi had lost their yields due to Cyclone Freddy. It brought about a sense of relief and reprieve as they were now able to replant and harvest crops in the following months, thus stablising their food security and allowing them to generate an income. 

They will be supported and monitored by the Department of Agriculture's Extension Services, so as to ensure that they employ modern methods of farming for maximum success and outcomes.
