To our incredible and enthusiastic environmentalist friends,
As we approach the cold weather around the mountain where we live, we are focusing on activities that can be done close to home. One of them refers to selecting the mother trees from which we will collect the seeds to be planted in our forest nursery.
What is a mother tree?
The mother tree is the tree from which we sill collect the seeds. It’s usually a little bit better when compared with other trees from the same species, because it is healthy and strong,
But, do you actually know the importance of having a healthy mother tree?
If the trees are not healthy or well nourished, they will produce poor quality seeds and they in turn will pass on their genetic inheritance to the next generation. So it’s important for us to select healthy trees, and register them on our Geographical Information System, so that we can be sure of choosing seeds that will grow into healthy seedlings, and healthy trees, and will produce healthy seeds to pass onto the next generation.
And next week we’ll have a special visitor who is very experienced in seed collection and he will help us locate the best possible mother trees so that we can continue to reforest with high quality trees. Stay tuned!
