Due to the floods resulting from Cyclone Freddy between the end of February and the beginning of March, ESMABAMA submitted a project to help 159 families who were badly affected by the floods. We received a total of 1.020 dollars (USD) through GlobalGiving, of which 1.000 USD equivalent to 64.4060 Meticais (MZN) were disbursed before we submitted the project. With this amount we were able to buy 1.000 USD - 18 poultry kits, vegetable and cereal seeds and a couple of pigs to help 18 families restart their lives. It should be noted that the total number of families affected was very high. In total ESMABAMA helped 159 families that found shelter in Machanga mission, managed by ESMABAMA, a higher ground.
After the distribution of kits, an ESMABAMA's agrarian technician gave trainings on agricultural practices and livestock. After the trainings, the technician has been accompanying regularly the affected families, so they can improve their production.
The remaining 20 dollars fundraised through GlobalGiving have not yet been disbursed and this amount can be used for petrol for the monitoring visits by the technician, as some families live in distant affected areas.
Emilia filipe is a mother of 3 minor daughters, and during the floods her house was destroyed. She and her daughters faced many difficulties. Emilia told us that "after the floods, we faced hungry because we lost everything we had sown. Machanga is known for extreme drought, but this year it had rain, and the crops were growing, but the floods destroyed everything. We even had only one meal a day", she lamented.
Maria lourenco, told us about the situation she experienced during the flood season and was very grateful for the implementation of the project, and said "I am very happy with what we received, I will grow the seed and raise animals for consumption and sale. With the money from the sales, I will buy school materials for my children and other family needs".
