New Year, New Curriculum, New Timetable...

Dear supporter,

We hope 2019 has gotten off to a brilliant start for you!  We've had a very busy few months here at Helping Hands.  With changes, developments and new partnerships, there's lots to catch you up on...!

New Curriculum and Timetable

Our new timetable and curriculum have brought additional subjects and increased student teacher time to every day of the week.

Sports, music, maths and reading are all now scheduled into the daily timetable, giving our students much more variety, as well as new opportunities to excel.  The children have all quickly adapted to their new schedule and are enjoying their extra lessons, as well as, of course, the additional time they get to spend with their friends!

We're so happy and proud to be able to share positive developments with you!  However, these changes do unfortunately impact on our running costs, which have seen an increase over the last couple of months.

We're committed to maintaining our programme, and continuing to look for ways of improving and developing what we offer, but to do this we need your help.  Could you spare a few pounds or dollars each month to help us cover these extra costs?

Every little really does help and can go a long way in Cambodia.  Recurring donors are incredibly valuable to us, as they enable us to plan for the long-term and spend more time focussing on providing the best possible education and care to our students instead of looking for further funds.

Buffalo Invasion!

We had an unfortunate event a few weeks ago when some local buffalo got into our on-site garden and ate all of our morning glory!  We're sure they all very much enjoyed their feast, but we were unfortunately left a little short of fresh vegetables for our breakfast programme...!

To ensure this doesn't happen again, we set in place a plan to build a new, stronger fence around the perimeter of the school to help keep out any unwanted animals.

In true community spirit, the villagers of Prasat Char rallied around to help us.

Despite the low average income of the villagers, over 100 of them pooled together to donate funds to help us buy the materials needed for the new fence.  On top of this, many of the locals gave up their time on the weekend to help us make a start on building it.

We're so grateful to have the support of the village at times like this, and we thank each and every family that has helped us with this build.

Alumni Give Back to Helping Hands

Every year we have a group of alumni who are keen to give back to Helping Hands, and return to volunteer at the school for a few hours each week.  This year we have an incredible 10 volunteers!

Their time volunteering with us gives them a great opportunity to learn new skills and gain practical experience, and we love having the extra help!

Our current group, some of whom only just graduated from Helping Hands this year, have been giving a helping hand in all sorts of ways! From leading sports classes and reading with students in the library, to even covering maths and Khmer classes, they’re all doing an amazing job!

Exciting New Partnership

St George's International School in Siem Reap are keen for their students to participate in some regular community work, so naturally, we jumped at the chance to have them give us a helping hand!

Each month a group of St George's students will come and work on a specific project in our garden.

On their first visit, they got stuck into clearing some overgrown land, enabling us to utilise the extra space to grow more vegetables for our students breakfasts. They all did such a great job!

For their next visit, the students are planning to build two large containers for us.  One, to hold our compost, and another to create a larger area for storing plastic bottles and recycling. We can't wait to have them back!

Thank you!

As always, thank you so much for your continued support!

Please continue to give us a 'helping hand' and spread the word to your family and friends.

From all the students, teachers and staff orkun chran!!
