Picaflor House is not only a school based in a rural village, we also have a mobile library so we can take books and teachers to children in even more remote locations!
In this report, we will talk about the fantastic mobile library and what it does to support children's literacy.
The total number of children enrolled in the literacy program is 139.
Goals:
We are delighted to share that our mobile library project has made remarkable progress in reaching our target audience. Despite the challenges rural children face, such as the need to assist their families with farming activities, we've achieved a consistent 60% attendance rate in our sessions. This steady participation has created a vibrant environment where students actively engage in discussions and exchange ideas, allowing them to develop their critical and reflective thinking skills through the books provided in our reading comprehension program.
While some students have exhibited learning challenges, particularly in reading and writing, we have proactively sought and implemented strategies to address these needs. Our efforts are already bearing fruit, as the number of participating students continues to grow, fuelled by our targeted strategies that have sparked interest across the community.
The introduction of texts with integrated activities aimed at improving reading comprehension has been met with enthusiasm. These resources ensure that our sessions are becoming increasingly popular, attracting more user’s week after week. Additionally, we’ve combined our reading activities with art-based sessions, which have further motivated students and made learning more enjoyable. The children enjoy making drawings about what they have read and then presenting to the class.
Challenges:
Despite our successes, we recognise that a small group of students in two of the communities we serve still struggle with reading and writing. These students, particularly those aged 10 & 11, remain a concern. Additionally, we have identified a small number of students aged 6 & 7 who are still in the very early stages of reading and writing comprehension. To address these needs more effectively, we are exploring the introduction of a reading and writing booklet designed to motivate students and engage them more actively in their learning journey.
We also see the importance of beginning each learning session with dynamic activities that spark students' interest and focus on the subject matter at hand. To further support our goals, we plan to implement a monthly activity plan, outlining the progress we aim to achieve.
Story of Success:
In one small village, we have a wonderful student named Kusi who, despite facing challenges with reading and writing, remains one of our most dedicated participants. Kusi's diligence and enthusiasm are truly inspiring. Week after week, she not only participates actively but also helps others. Her determination to improve is evident as she has taken on the personal challenge of borrowing a book from our mobile library with the goal of reading it independently each week. As a team, we are committed to supporting Kusi in achieving this goal, and her journey exemplifies the positive impact our project is having in the community.
