In Spain, children also go hungry

By Michelle Simon | Project Leader

Childhood is a crucial stage for physical, emotional, and cognitive development, and experiencing hunger can have devastating, lifelong effects. The lack of necessary resources and income to maintain a balanced diet forces many families to rely on ultra-processed foods, leading to increased forms of malnutrition such as overweight or obesity.

Lacking access to a minimal caloric intake or relying on ultra-processed foods is associated with a 30% higher likelihood of poor general health, a 36% higher likelihood of being overweight, and a 12% higher risk of depression. According to the latest report by the Plataforma de Infancia, 33% of children and adolescents in Spain are at risk of poverty and social exclusion.

This situation translates into food insecurity, which, as defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, means the lack of “sufficient safe and nutritious food for normal growth and development and an active and healthy life.” In our country, this circumstance has doubled following the COVID-19 pandemic.

But what are the consequences of food insecurity in children?

- Health problems: such as growth delays, malnutrition, and obesity. They may also develop chronic conditions like anemia or recurrent infections.
- Impact on mental health: food insecurity can manifest in behavioral problems, difficult social relationships, and cause stress, anxiety, or depression.
- Academic performance: the lack of nutrients affects children's ability to concentrate, learn, and retain information.
