Maria (7), Adri (5) and Hugo (7) pictured here from left to right are only three from our 292 beneficiaries of “free schools meals” program. All of them have spent the past seven months eating in their schools, from Monday to Friday, and assuring at least one meal per with the necessary nutrients.
“I am happy because I can share my luch time with my schoolmates and eat many yummy things”, Maria says. “My parents are happier too because they don´t concern about it and can focus on looking for a job.”
As a result of the economic crisis in Spain the number of children living below the poverty line has increased dramatically. In Spain the figures are alarming -is the second country in the European Union with a higher rate of child poverty.Children are the first to suffer when their parents lose their jobs or when their family income is diminished, and the quality of their care or nutrition is compromised. This dramatic situation has driven us to create our program.
This service therefore is a relief for the care of these children at no cost to the families providing the necessary and appropriate diet to each child. This project is necessary to the extent that a need is detected by the social services due to the lack of sufficient intervention specific resources. Here we do everything possible to support families who are suffering dramatic situations including evictions and lack of economic resources, by helping them through our professionals to provide proper care to their children.
This academic year (2015-2016) we have given 292 grants spread out in 48 schools around the country. Ours beneficiaries are children at social risk from families who are suffering dramatic situations including evictions and lack of economic resources, even basic needs such as food and clothing.
In the name of children we want to say a big thank you to our donors.
