Dear supporters,
This year, TFB's free Summer Academy provides access to quality education for nearly 1,000 students, coming from different unprivileged communities from Sofia and the region. The Academy provides practical training experience for all incoming participants in the TFB program.
"Today, we will have a quiz. Do you know what a quiz is?", asks the teacher Gabriela. Some of the students are not quite familiar with the meaning of this word, but others know and that's why they share their knowledge with the others. "I will ask you questions and I will split you into two groups - "arguments" and "thesis". Each group will have 10 seconds to answer every question. Are you ready? ", asks the teacher again.
So, the first question is: "What is an essay?". The second is: "What is an argument?". The third one: "What is the structure of an essay?" ... After ten minutes the two teams have the same number of correct answers and the teacher is a step closer to the goal of preparing the children for writing an essay - not just by teaching but also, by allowing students to experience it. Likewise, with ease, these young people recap the meaning of words such as "empathy", "stereotype", "active listening" and more. And they imperceptibly learn how to communicate effectively, which is not so common in ordinary classrooms.
That is what has taken place in a philosophy class of the 22-year-old teacher Gabriela, a participant in the Teach for Bulgaria leadership program, during TFB's eighth free Summer Academy. Her students are between grades 9-12, they work in groups, laugh, move from one place to another and seem intrigued by what they are doing. The students want to improve their knowledge and skills in the summer and this free academy is their choice to do that.
Your engagement supports the work of people, like Gabriela, to develop and improve students knowledge.
Thank you!
