Charu couldn’t go to school and her grades were slipping fast, all because of her period.
She didn’t have access to the resources she required, resulting in her missing school and fearing something was terribly wrong with her. Charu suffered with heavy bleeding during her period. Needing reassurance, she reached out to her mother, but in her small village community, periods aren’t openly discussed, and her mother shunned all her attempts. Charu, already shy, felt she was alone in this and retreated even more into herself.
Charu’s teacher noticed her lack of attendance, arranging a meeting to find out why. She was trained in adolescent health for girls by the project our partners deliver.
Charu finally felt heard.
Our partners are working continuously to ensure increased awareness and essential menstrual health coaching is carried out in educational systems, to guarantee girls feel supported through their school years. Charu was referred to a treatment center, where her condition could be further accessed and treated. Charu’s parents though supportive, were anxious about the financial burden this would incur; the project covered all costs and eliminated this fear.
With the support of community groups and healthcare visits, Charu is back to school consistently, free from nervousness, allowing her to fully focus on her studies and thrive! With increased focus on her education, working with the project, her parents are encouraging her to pursue higher education.
We eagerly await to see what the future holds for Charu thanks to this vital project, reaching out to girls in need and reducing the stigma that surrounds periods.
