Dear Friend of the Poop to Fuel Project,

January 15 , 2024 marked an important event at the David La Motte school in the extremely poor neighborhood of Tzanchaj. On this day, twelve First Graders arrived at the school. Each year, another grade level will be added, until the number of children at the school will total approximately 200 students.

As you know from reading our reports, Tu'ik Ruch' Lew/Helping the Earth (TRL) has been waiting for years for this accreditation, so that there will be enough children contributing to the biogas digester for it to produce gas. With the pre-schoolers, first graders and staff, there will now be 96 contributors.

Last week, TRL was visited by members from the Rotary Club of Los Altos, California. They participated with TRL's team on Improved Cookstove installations at two sites. The installation in Tzanchaj was in a situation of such abject poverty, that although we left feeling glad to see the tremendous positive impact of the new ONIL stove on this family's existence, we felt depressed over the gravity of their situation.

Our next stop was to visit the David LaMotte School, where we understood that three of the family's children were enrolled as non-paying students. How delighted our visitors were to enter the tidy grounds of the little school, with the new buildings painted in happy, crayon colors; where there was singing and order and joy to counteract the chaos of deprivation at home. It was easy to see the immensely important role this school plays in the lives of these children.

Our Rotary visitors had come, eager to see where TRL intended to install the biogas digester, as some of the members had seen these same Chinese fixed-dome digesters successfully used at schools in Uganda. Knowing that the gas produced would be used to prepare food for these children, the importance of the biogas digester at the David LaMotte school was greatly appreciated and acknowledged.

I personally invite you to come and visit us in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala to visit all of TRL's projects and see the results of your support.

Gratefully yours,

Candis
