During our most recent trip to Peru, we planted and distributed a total of 6,000 fruit trees with five Amazon communities, including several schools. One school in particular stood out, described by FTPF's TreeEo as 'like a fairytale'. Let us paint the picture for you...
On our final day, we were working in the Peruvian Amazon river community of Palmeras II, in which we planted 165 trees at the local school with the help of all the students from the village. Anyone walking by that day would have been greeted by the sounds of children singing, laughing, playing, and planting trees. While we planted on a long trail in the forest, kids were running ahead of each other to get to the next tree while reciting all the steps in the planting process they had just learned—overall exhibiting such joy and enthusiasm! In the end, a storm closed in on us as we were planting the last of the trees, just in time to give the trees, our crew, and all the children a good soak!
This is just one example of what it is like in the field planting fruit trees. Joy, laughter, hope--and sometimes rain!--are regular parts of the process. With all this goodness accompanying trees as they go in the ground, it is no wonder our projects have such a high success rate.
