Self Help Groups in Case of Emergencies

By Atul Lekhra | Manager Online Donor Communication

Devali age 28, is a member of a Self Help Group managed by Seva Mandir in her village. Last year, she fell critically ill and the doctor suggested her to get her uterus operated. She did not have enough money for the medical emergency.

She then approached her Self Help Group and requested for a loan of Rs.16,000 ( $250) . Her Self Help Group approved the loan, even though her savings was less. Devali says that money lender would have charged an exorbitant interest rate of 60% per annum while she was able to get the loan from her savings group @ just 10% per annum. She feels thankful to her group for supporting her and says, “If not for the group, I would have been in a never ending debt trap

Today Over 10,000 women are associated with 612 Self Help Groups and have similar experiences to share. This faith that they portray would not have been possible without your undeterred support and encouragement.

I would take this opportunity to share with you that Bonus day is round the corner on 16th September from 9 AM EDT. The donations made on bonus day will be matched up to 30%. That means we would be able to expand further and hence would appeal to you to support us on 16th September.

We would love to hear from you on your side of thoughts on making these rural women financially empowered . Please do reach out to me at atul.lekhra@sevamandir.org

Thank you for joining hands with us! I am sure we can really make a difference in these women’s lives by making them stand on their own feet and break the circle of poverty.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Warm Regards,

Atul Lekhra
