Responding to COVID 19

By Rick Yount | Executive Director

I hope this message finds you and your families healthy and safe. We look forward to moving past this time and on to brighter days ahead.

June was National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month. And while we may be physically distant, we know that we remain connected and are stronger together as a result. The COVID-19 pandemic has been stressful for everyone. We are all dealing with similar daily challenges: isolation, financial anxiety, kids at home while juggling work, and for many — job uncertainty, among many other concerns. But for Veterans who were already struggling with PTSD pre-pandemic, now more than ever, it’s important they have the care, support and resources they need.

To enhance our support for Veterans, WCC recently launched a new video series: “WCC Unleashed.” This program is designed to help Veterans reinforce the bonds they have with their pet dogs. We are also happy to report that our tried and true Mission Based Trauma Recovery (MBTR) training program is still operating at full steam at all locations, albeit via virtual classes, with in-person training slowly returning with COVID-compliant safety precautions. And importantly — we are FINALLY able to resume our placement of Service Dogs with Veterans! In fact, later this month four very special Service Dogs will meet their fur-ever Veterans.

I continue to be amazed by what our staff has accomplished over the past several months in service to our Veterans. It wasn’t easy and there have been a few hiccups along the way, but with flexibility, creativity and a little elbow grease, everyone has risen to the challenge and reinforced their commitment to our mission and service to our Veterans. I couldn’t be prouder.

We at WCC remain committed to doing our part to help provide the tools for recovery to our Warriors and their families. We are so grateful to have friends, like you, with us in the journey!

Stay safe and stay PAW-sitive!
