For many years April has represented for Smiles Forever a new opportunity to bring and spread our dental care and love to the children of Villa Tunari in Chapare – Cochabamba. This year represents a big step forward in our Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) program. We are moving towards to the implementation of Glass ionomer compound (GIC) fillings program to provide better care and more esthetic results for permanent teeth. This program will also include sealants. SDF and GIC combined can act as a sealant.
As part of our organizational objective to bring more dental care to the children, we proceeded to take a sample dental survey and basic medical history of another school in the area (2 miles away). The100 evaluated children from the Heroes del Chaco-San Antonio were used as a comparison group to the children of Maria del Rosario school (initial school of our SDF program since 2016). There was a minimum of 10 cavities per child as opposed to no new cavities in Maria del Rosario. Many dental emergencies, extractions and root canal treatments were needed at Heroes del Chaco-San Antonio.
This results are alarming but our commitment to the children and your support will allow us include this new 480 new children from Heroes del Chaco - San Antonio School in to our SDF and GIC program.
