During this pandemic, the Cochabamba - Bolivia population (headquarters of our projects and offices), has been seriously affected at all levels, both health and financial. Since our mission is: "Improve the quality of life of impoverished children through free preventive and restorative dentistry", we are empathetic with our grantees for the harsh situation that we are all going through.
It is for this reason that we had to turn the screw and think, adapt and generate a new approach to how to make dental treatments effective in favor of the most unprotected.
The risk is still high with a vaccinated population that barely exceeds 30% in the country. We cannot take things lightly. In the same way, we must fight to continue providing volumes of dental treatments as in the pre-pandemic stage.
Although the situations are different, the needs are the same. Children are at risk with pain and dental needs that range from the very urgent (high-risk abscesses) to basic fluoridations.
Furthermore, we have to consider that our team assumes very great risks when treating patients with equipment that is based on air and water spray. These factors put at risk not only the health of our team, but can also be a carrier agent for other patients, their families and anyone else. Therefore, we proceed to prioritize treatments that do not necessarily require spray-based equipment for their operation.
Our approach is based on the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride (S.D.F.) to stop the progression of dental cavities and after compliance with strict dental protocols, we proceed with a Glass Ionomer Composite (G.I.C.) filling. This allows a filling without cutting the tooth in order to complete a treatment of minimal exposure to the contagion of Covid – 19, both for the patient and for our valuable and committed members of our team.
The results are of optimal quality and are effective in terms of time and cost, allowing us to compensate chair times with those now used for extreme disinfection of environments and chairs between patients.
Your support is very important so that we can achieve our goals .... Thank you in advance to all who make up this great family that is Smiles Forever.
