Action in times of uncertainty

By Ariadna Godreau Aubert | Founder and Director

This December, Ayuda Legal Puerto Rico will open a new cycle of the Community Paralegals Program. Born in 2020, this initiative grew from our conviction that legal knowledge must live in the hands of the people—that understanding our rights is not the privilege of lawyers, but a collective tool for transformation. What began as a project to share legal education and tools has become a living practice of action, learning, and a contribution to building community power.

Over the past years, the program has taken many shapes. It has lived in community centers, universities, and digital spaces; it has recruited women, elders, students, and organizers who understand that defending rights begins with knowing them. Each version taught us that when people have access to these tools, they can make decisions, resist injustice, and build networks of care that strengthen entire communities.

We reopen this cycle in a time of profound uncertainty—locally and globally. The spaces to defend rights are narrowing, and inequalities deepen. Yet, these are also times that demand courage and collective imagination. The new edition of the Community Paralegals will gather people committed to defending human rights, the right to stay, and economic justice. Together, we will explore how to act and organize when systems fail to protect us.

From January to May  participants will meet twice a month. Most sessions will be virtual, with opportunities to connect in person. The format is flexible, designed to respond to the realities of those who join—workers, caregivers, and community leaders who balance many responsibilities. In each  session, we will learn, reflect, and design strategies rooted in real experiences and collective care.

This cycle, titled Action in Times of Uncertainty, is both a space for training and for hope. It invites us to imagine new ways to defend what is ours: our homes, our dignity, and our right to stay in the places we love. It reminds us that even in moments of crisis, knowledge can be a form of shelter, and community can be a source of strength.

To our allies and donors, we extend a heartfelt invitation to walk with us once again. Your support makes it possible for more people to learn, organize, and defend their rights. Each session, each story shared, and each connection built brings us closer to a more just Puerto Rico—one where justice is practiced daily, and transformation begins in the hands of the people.
