10 Years of Hora Segura: A Decade of Support

By Sofia Barahona Mena | Development Director

This past quarter has been especially meaningful for Fundación Todo Mejora as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Hora Segura, our free emotional support app for LGBTQIA+ children, teens, and youth. Coinciding with Pride Month, we commemorated this milestone at a special event hosted at the residence of the Norwegian Ambassador to Chile. The gathering brought together leaders from public policy, civil society, and academia to reflect on the app’s impact and the urgent need to safeguard mental health support for queer youth.

During the event, we launched three new reports—now available on our open-access platform Bibliodiversa—that systematize and analyze data collected by Hora Segura between 2020 and 2024. Among the key findings: 2 out of 5 conversations on the platform report distress linked to minority stress—a psychological burden stemming from social rejection, discrimination, and lack of inclusive education. This distress does not originate from a person’s identity, but from a society that fails to fully embrace it. These insights reaffirm the urgent need for accessible, confidential, and empathetic support spaces.

Hora Segura is operated by over 100 volunteer mental health professionals who provide first-response psychological aid to LGBTQIA+ youth experiencing emotional crises, discrimination, or psychosocial distress. Since its launch, it has helped thousands of young people find relief and hope in moments of vulnerability. The model has inspired similar initiatives in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Paraguay.

As our Executive Director, Cristian Prinea said:

“Celebrating 10 years of Hora Segura means recognizing its real-life impact. In today’s context—marked by setbacks in rights and the rise of hate speech—supporting initiatives like this is not just important, it’s urgent. We need to sustain free, confidential, and accessible mental health services that save lives and build more just and empathetic communities.”

We were also honored by the presence of Chile’s Minister of Social Development and Family, Javiera Toro, and Norwegian Ambassador Per Anders Nilsen, who emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces for young people.

To keep Hora Segura running 365 days a year, we urgently need your support. Donations from our community—your donations—are more crucial than ever. Every contribution helps us continue providing emotional support to LGBTQIA+ youth, who often have nowhere else to turn.

Your support helps save lives. Please consider donating today.
