September and October 2023 Update for the HAS Sanctuary

By Mini Vasudevan | Project Leader

Andrew Goes to his Forever Home
Andrew Goes to his Forever Home

September and October were hectic months of relentless work and amazing transformations. Highlight of these two months has been the mass vaccination drive we conducted on the auspices of the World Rabies Day on September 28th. We had a week long activity planned around the World Rabies Day, vaccinating a whopping 585 dogs giving them protection against the deadly disease of Rabies. Among the many rescues we undertook this month, the stories of Stacy and Andrew truly stand out. Once again, your unwavering commitment for the cause saw us through all tough spots.

Stacy's journey with us began in a most heart-wrenching manner, stuffed in a bag and abandoned at the gate. Matted fur and relentless fleas clung to her, resulting in a strenuous two-week effort just to make her comfortable. Gradually trusting us, Stacy emerged from her crate, revealing a stiffness resulting from her spinal bones fused to the neck making her neck stiff. Now, free from matted fur, Stacy embraces human companionship—transforming from aggression to reveling in affection, perching on laps with absolute contentment. Despite limited neck mobility, her health and heart remain robust. Her journey has shaped her into an extraordinary soul, and she awaits a compassionate companion.

Andrew's story has an almost fairy-tale ending. He came into our care at the tender age of 45 days, a fragile soul in immense pain, as one of his limbs was totally crushed and a broken bone had pierced through, the result of a tragic accident. The protruding bone and the crushed portion of the limb were removed, and after three weeks of devoted care, he emerged healed as a tri-pawd, not even aware that he was missing one limb! His gentle nature and unconditional love for humans quickly made him a favorite among our staff and volunteers. Siva was going through the pangs of having lost his beloved pet, Indhu, who had crossed the rainbow bridge a few months back. However, it was the uncanny similarity of Andrew to his dear Indhu that sealed the deal and he was whisked away to his forever home!

These two months again witnessed a flurry of volunteering activities by youngsters who helped us to bathe and groom as well as take the paralyzed dogs on their outing on wheels. An overseas volunteer who practises physiotherapy did an upskilling session for our staff and other volunteers that will go a long way in improving the mobility of several pets that are victims of accidents and have suffered spinal injuries.

As our rescue commitments are going up, we request your continued support. Your $20 donation helps to cover the cost of one spay/neuter surgery and vaccination against Rabies, while your $10 donation covers the annual immunization of a street pup. You may also sponsor a walking wheel cart to one of our paralyzed dogs. Kindly encourage your friends and family too to make a small donation when possible. Thank you for your support!
