By Peninah Nthenya | Founder and manager of Safe Spaces
Hello from Nairobi,
As I write this report another fire has been raging through our slums. It is the fourth fire in 1-2 years. Leaving 35 families of our Safe Spaces community without a home, without anything left but their lives. This time. One person heavily burned. A lot of misery, loss and anxiety. At the same time, I know we will overcome this crisis again. That is what we are best at. We hop from crisis to crisis in this community but at the same time, we stand tall, we help each other and we start rebuilding and making future plans. Because we are strong and we have the power in ourselves to do so.
I just felt to take you along on what happened today and how this affects our lives. But, let's talk about automechanics. We are pleased to to report that 20 girls are enrolled in the auto mechanics program, with 10 girls pursuing a certificate and 10 pursuing a diploma. These programs offer valuable training in auto repair and auto maintenance and can help prepare students for careers in this field.
Since the girls are currently awaiting their exams in March, they have completed their course work and are now preparing to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through exams. These exams may cover topics such as engine repair, brakes and suspension systems.
Once the girls have obtained their diploma, they will enrol in a career in the automotive industry in Kenya, later this year. And come back regularly to mentor the new auto mechanics students.
Thanking you so much for your ongoing support, which helps us all to continue to focus on the financially independent future for girls outside the slums, no matter what crisis hits us now,
Wishing you all the best,
Peninah Nthenya Musyimi
