Training female car mechanics in Nairobi slum

by SAFE SPACES ORGANIZATION AFRICA
Training female car mechanics in Nairobi slum

Summary

We offer every year 30 girls from the Mathare slums in Nairobi/Kenya the chance to study car mechanics. A profession that empowers and secures these young women with a job and an economically independent future outside the slums. Safe Spaces has lengthy experience in offering this 2 year vocational training. It is now time to open our own garage, where these girls can be educated, do their internships and grow. For Safe Spaces it means becoming less dependent on funding over time.

Challenge

Many girls in the slums dream of becoming a hair dresser or open a beauty salon. At Safe Spaces we believe that becoming a car mechanics pro as a girl, would probably open more doors. And we were right. In the last years 50 girls have completed our 2 year vocational training and found a job in a garage or a job in another area of the car industry. We want to continue this pathway out of the slums for more young women.

Solution

This provides vocational training for the young women looking for a good paying job and a way out of the slums. These role models will be more visible for the other girls in our programs.

Long-Term Impact

In the future we dream of owning our own garage.
