Humanitarian Aid for Ukraine

By Corporate Partnerships | German Red Cross

Due to the ongoing armed conflict, the need for humanitarian assistance in Ukraine remains very high. The German Red Cross (DRK) supports the Ukrainian Red Cross (URK) through a comprehensive aid program—from emergency relief and disaster protection to health and social services.

  • On-the-ground presence: 17 DRK staff are deployed in Ukraine, working closely with the URK to plan and implement aid programs and services.

  • Tailored humanitarian aid: The focus is on the most vulnerable populations, providing accommodation, cash transfers, and vouchers—especially targeting internally displaced persons (IDPs).

  • Community support centers: These centers deliver widespread social services such as shelter, electricity, warmth, first aid, food, and psychosocial care.

  • Strengthening disaster preparedness: The DRK actively builds up local and regional disaster response and resilience capacities.

Highlights of DRK’s 2024-2025 Relief Efforts

  • Mobile health units: 22 mobile clinics support basic medical care for approximately 44,000 people, complemented by home-based care services for around 1,500 individuals.

  • Psychosocial support: More than 11,500 individuals—especially women and children—received mental health and psychosocial interventions.

  • Winter assistance: Cash assistance was provided to over 2,200 people and boilers installed to bring warmth to schools and hospitals, benefiting 19,000 individuals.

  • Rehabilitation: A physical and psychosocial rehabilitation program reached 569 individuals with therapy and mobility aids.

  • Emergency response: DRK teams carried out 600 missions, supporting 3,700 people.

  • Capacity building: Approximately 2,000 staff and volunteers were trained in key areas including home care, mental health, first aid, safety, logistics, and digital transformation.

  • Scope of impact: Overall, DRK and URK relief measures reached over 85,000 people in Ukraine.

Long-term Outlook and Strategic Focus

Looking ahead, the DRK plans to:

  • Prioritize reconstruction efforts and strengthen civil society resilience across Ukraine.

  • Scale health and social service systems to maintain and reinforce community wellbeing.

  • Continue offering humanitarian relief as long as it remains necessary.

The URK—with over 1,500 staff and 8,000 volunteers across more than 200 branches—remains a strong partner, capable of executing these efforts at all levels.
