Daughter of a peon, Zahra opened her eyes surrounded by poverty and grief. Her parents worried about providing for her and her siblings along with her aged and ailing grandparents. It was a plight she was to face her entire childhood. Part of a joint family system, Zahra’s father had many mouths to feed and many responsibilities to fulfill. Earning only Rs. 8000/- a month, he found it impossible to manage the expenses at home.
To make matters worse, Zahra, the apple of his eye, realized that she could not see clearly. Although intelligent and active, the little girl became quiet and recluse – uneasy amidst unfamiliar surroundings and confused while tending to her daily activities and chores.
During the day, she could still make out objects but after sunset, her vision seemed to completely fail. She would often cry and her mother was specially disturbed seeing her daughter in that state.
After a few months passed by this way, Zahra’s parents took her to a doctor who diagnosed her with cataract in both her eyes. The doctor recommended surgery. The news came as a shock to her family who loved her but could not fathom paying for the surgery. A neighborhood school had recently accepted Zahra on scholarship and although things seem to be lighting up for her, it seemed that she could make much of the opportunity at hand in her current condition. They had to excuse themselves from the school and their generous offer. Zahra was broken hearted.
However, one day, the LRBT field screening team organized a camp for that area.
Zahra’s mother took her for the screening and the LRBT team referred Zahra for cataract surgery to hteir Korangi Hospital and informed them that LRBT is a free eye care facility for the poor and needy and they will not be charged a single penny for Zahras treatment.
Zahra’s mother took her to LRBT free eye care hospital where she was examined in the Pediatric clinic and after routine protocols booked for surgery .
Zahra underwent surgery and is now resuming her admission process. The biggest lesson she learnt was that there are people out there who don’t know her but wish her well. The world and the beauty of hearts remain intact in the mind of this innocent girl. She will soon return for the surgery of her other eye and be ready for school in August.
