Girls playing Soccer!

Girls Soccer
Thanks to a special Kibale Forest Schools’ Program summer volunteer the girls at Kasiisi Primary School are becoming expert bare foot soccer players! In general, soccer is not a game that girls play in Uganda. Rural girls usually play netball – a forerunner of basket ball. However, as a result of regular coaching this summer, the Kasiisi Girls’ Soccer Team competed at the Sub-County level in 2016 for the first time – their first match was August 12th. We are so proud of the Kasiisi girls for giving soccer a try !
Additionally, this summer Kasiisi Primary School hosted a parents day! Boy and girl scouts showed off their activities, building fuel efficient, low emission stoves and camp shelters, and the Kasiisi Project Health Team demonstrated RUMPS (re-useable menstrual pads), tippy-taps for hand washing , dish racks for safe drying of eating utensils and storage of food, and small gardens designed for more intensive agriculture. As always the school and parents expressed their gratitude for everything that generous donors to the Kasiisi Project have done to improve their school.

Dormitory children
The Kasiisi Project recently completed a dormitory at Kasiisi Primary School for elementary school girls and boys. The dorm is a signfigant project, not only because of its scale, but also because the dormitory provides a safe place for young children to live, study, eat and have no commute to and from school! The children are able to focus on their studies. The dormitory is especially good for young girls who face lots of challenges while commuting many miles to school, these risks included older boys and men requesting sex in exchange for rides to school, money for books etc. Studies show for every year a girl stays in school her risks of HIV infection reduces 7% and her first pregnancy is delayed a year.
In February the Kasiisi Dormitory opened its second year of operation. In the first year boarders performed 16% better than day students in their primary leave exams. Enrollment has swelled to 73 children, 70% are girls.

Latrines for Girls

Crumbling Latrines
The Kasiisi Project Girls Support Program has worked diligently to build girl friendly latrines with washing facilities at 5 of the project primary schools. These latrines allow the girls the space and privacy to take care of feminine issues which used to keep the girls from attending school altogether.
Because of the success of the latrine project, the Kasiisi Project is now trying to expand girl specific latrine construction to all 14 schools associated with the Kasiisi Project, as well as maintain the latrines at the 5 core project schools. Just last month, an old latrine block at the Kasiisi Primary School Collapsed leaving just four cubicles and two washrooms for over 500 girls.
Adequate sanitation is profoundly an issue of dignity. Without proper sanitation, young girls miss school when they are menstruating, causing them to lag behind their male peers in the classroom.
The Kasiisi Project is committed to providing sanitary pads to young girls in primary school, as well as proper latrines. Research has shown that these two programs can keep girls in school and learning!
Attendence of girls continues to rise in Kasiis Project schools and we would like to THANK YOU for your continued support!
