Thanks to your support, we have been partnering with GlobalGiving for over 15 years on our project to train girls in Uganda to make ReUsable Menstrual Pads (also known as RUMPs). The aim is to provide girls with an easy and affordable way to effectively manage their menstruation so their periods will no longer force them to stay home from school and disrupt their learning.
In 2023, our trainings which are carried out in after-school health clubs, reached more than 800 students across our 16 partner primary schools located around Kibale National Park. Demonstrations were also made to around 6,000 others outside our clubs. We asked more than 400 of our trainees to tell us about their experience with RUMPs, and we summarized their responses in the graphs below. Nearly all girls (95%) said they would recommend RUMPs to other girls and, after their training, most (68%) said that they had trained other girls to make RUMPs, especially their sisters (47%). Most girls (82%) also shared that after learning how to make RUMPs, they never missed school because of their periods. Finally, 99% of girls said there was a continued need to teach this skill to other girls in their schools.
In sum, our RUMPs trainings continue to be effective at keeping Ugandan girls in school and valued by those who have gone through the program. There also continues to be a need for these trainings, as each year hundreds of girls experience their first periods and need affordable solutions for managing them. Finally, we were so happy to learn that our RUMPs trainings are the gift that keeps on giving, as girls are also training family and friends to make and use these menstrual supplies.
Thank you for your ongoing support for this wonderful, life-changing program!
