Hi Friends,
It's been awhile since our last update. We've been so busy making things happen, that we haven't—until now—taken a moment to stop and tell you about it.
Last year, we made significant strides in our teen pregnancy prevention work. We trained a fifth cohort of 24 teen girls and young women in sexual and reproductive health, leadership, and advocacy; launched a pilot initiative to engage 10 young men to promote condom use and healthy masculinity in their communities; and organized pregnancy prevention workshops and fairs for more than 400 students in local schools.
This year, we are taking another leap forward. In collaboration with the Argosy Foundation and Hands to Honduras, our team is taking on teen pregnancy prevention in Tela, a coastal town about an hour north of us. Specifically, we are hoping to contribute to the prevention of first pregnancies and the delay of future pregnancies among pregnant teens and new teen mothers at the local hospital and students at two local high schools.
To kick-start this effort, members of our staff and youth facilitators led basic pregnancy prevention workshops with more than 200 students in 7th to 12th grades. During these workshops, the students explored essential topics such as self-esteem and life planning, sexual anatomy and hygiene, relationships, and birth control. They also served as an opportunity to identify student leaders with potential to become peer advocates for pregnancy prevention in their school.
This is just the start and we look forward to continuing to share our progress in the coming months. If you aren't already following us on Facebook or Instagram, they are a great way to get (almost) real-time updates from Honduras.
Before I sign off, I'd like to share a quick update on Veronica—the rising leader featured in our last update. After graduating from high school with honors, she set her sights on securing a spot in one of the top universities' nursing or medical schools. Today, we're happy to share that she has embarked on her journey as a nursing student at the National Autonomous University of Honduras! You can watch this video to learn more about her journey and what lead up to this moment.
Thank you for being part of this work.
In appreciation,
Amanda
