Dear Donors,
We want to thank you sincerely for your continued generosity and encouragement. Every contribution you have made to this project is helping us move closer to the goal of providing clean water to people living in remote and underserved areas of Nigeria.
Through our My Health, My Data Community Needs Assessment, we visited several communities and settlements and found one particular Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Northern Nigeria facing an urgent water crisis. The only source of drinking water, a manual pump borehole, has become unsafe due to contamination. The metal parts have rusted over time, leading to high levels of iron in the water. Unfortunately, children, older adults, and others in the camp continue to drink this water every day.
Our original plan was to construct new manual boreholes in four neglected villages. That goal remains, but the funds we have raised on GlobalGiving so far are not yet enough to start new construction. In the meantime, we cannot ignore the urgent need in this IDP camp. To reduce the risk of waterborne diseases like diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera, especially among children and elderly persons, we plan to use the available funds to provide a chemical water treatment solution.
This includes:
• Chlorine to kill germs
• Ferric chloride for clumping and settling impurities
• Sodium hypochlorite for extra protection
• Activated carbon to trap dirt and smell
This is a temporary fix, but a necessary one. It will help protect the camp from dehydration and disease while we continue our effort to raise enough money for long-term solutions like borehole construction.
In our next reports, we will provide updates and photo documentation of the chemical water treatment distribution. This way, you can see exactly how your support is helping the community stay safe and hydrated.
We are asking for your continued help. A single borehole may not look like much, but to a rural family or a child in an IDP camp, it means safety, health, and dignity. Your donations have already brought us part of the way. With your continued support, we can bring proper drinking water closer to those who need it the most.
Please share this project with your friends and family, and help us reach others who can give. Every amount makes a difference.
With deep gratitude,
Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
