Summary

The project aims to provide access to safe drinking water for neglected villages in the North Central regions of Nigeria. To address critical water scarcity issues and reduce the prevalence of waterborne disease, the initial phase of the project will install four cost-effective and easy-to-maintain manual pump boreholes in villages that are desperately in need of drinking water. Major beneficiaries include children, women, the elderly & animals subjected to cruelty through water fetching labour.

Challenge

The problem addressed by the project is the lack of access to safe drinking water in neglected villages across various locations in the North Central regions of Nigeria. These villages face critical water scarcity issues, leading to the prevalence of waterborne diseases among vulnerable populations, including children, women, the elderly, and animals subjected to the hardship of water-fetching labour. Population of these areas is estimated to be around 370,000 according to Population Commission.

Solution

This project will solve the problem of inadequate access to safe drinking water. By installing manual boreholes in each targeted village, it will provide sustainable access to clean water. It will drastically reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases, like cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea, which disproportionately affect these communities. The project will also eliminate the need for dangerous journeys to fetch water from distant sources, freeing up time for education and improved livelihoods.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact seeks to sustainably improve community health through clean water access, reducing waterborne diseases. It empowers communities by freeing up time spent fetching water, promoting education and economic activities. By integrating environmental sustainability practices and community involvement in borehole maintenance, the project builds strength against future water scarcity challenges. Successful implementation sets a precedent for expanding similar projects to other regions.
