AI penguins, jellyfish drones & spongy school buses: a new wave of inventions from greenlight girls

Extracting DNA in Paris
Extracting DNA in Paris

As we excitedly leap into a new season, we take a moment to breathe in the fresh air of the trees and flowers in bloom and reflect on all of the ways that our g4g daisy has helped bring a wind of change to the next generation of female STEM leaders.

Last year, we inspired over 7,000 young g4g superstars across 11 countries with more than 35 projects and 426 mentors to create more than 270 sustainable future inventions – tallying us up to over 58,400 inspired students since 2010. This year, the g4g team decided to reach for the stars and has been creating magic behind the scenes to reach our #g4gMoonshot goal – inspiring 50,000 more girls in 2023! With our lab coats and goggles on, our team has been diving into the creative design process to develop the funnest, quirkiest, and most exciting STEM projects and events. At g4g, we dream BIG and with our eyes wide open because more girls need STEM opportunities now more than ever.

We’ve been on the move – traveling to Lisbon, Paris, London, Brussels, Barcelona, and beyond – to help colour the paths of magnificent young women who share their passion for STEM (along with their astonishing imagination!) and to meet hundreds of new roles models who will help us activate these changemakers. If we could describe the last few months in just two words, we’d say they were all about inventions and connections.

Our STEM adventurers jumped right into challenging missions that seemed hard at first, but they had the perfect recipe for success:

  • One heaping cup of out-of-the-box thinking
  • A healthy dose of self-esteem
  • The perfect blend of imagination and curiosity about the world that surrounds us
  • One big spoon of sweet support from a great team of role models
  • And just a dash of crazy ideas to spice things up.

The results have been incredible, and it is impressive how much a girl’s mind can expand when you break down all the boundaries. When you give girls permission and support to put their creativity in motion, everything starts to seem possible – even going to outer space!

Our team is lucky to be able to see these moments of inspiration and spark, and they make us certain that we’re walking on the right track to help girls everywhere. And just as the legendary Nobel Prize winner, Barbara McClintock, said: “If you know you are on the right track, if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off…no matter what they say.”

We know (and science confirms) that girls lose confidence by as much as 45% by the time they reach 15 years old, and the fear of failing prevents them from unlocking their potential and achieving their goals. Our programs not only ignite girls' passion for STEM, but also teach them that trying does not mean regret and that failure does not correspond to a lack of talent. You can only learn to walk the right track by constantly walking, and we gladly take on the task of motivating girls to try, make mistakes, and try again so that they can learn to fly one day.

And while there’s so much on the horizon as spring takes hold, we’re excited to reflect on what the last few months have brought us too:

g4g STEM Exploratoria with the Avantor Foundation in Paris, February 9

Our future female scientists embarked on a secret Mission Possible to create an invention for the Lab of the Future. In a 6-step process, girls worked together to develop and prototype new ideas, designs, and tools that would help solve the challenges of the future while exploring potential career paths with Avantor volunteer role models. From an AI penguin that would search for the best place to create a lab in Antarctica to an underwater one-wheeled device that would recharge submarines, our young female inventors were filled with innovative ideas, and oh, what fun it was to see them create a prototype of their inventions! Anyone interested in investing?

g4g STEM Exploratoria with OLX in Lisbon, February 10

More than 65 girls, aged 11-15, learned from OLX role models and engaged in the design thinking process to create inventions for a sustainable classroom of the future. These young scientists were introduced to a variety of technological innovations and how to integrate them into their everyday lives to make our world a greener and a better place. From spongy school buses underwater to solar heated classrooms and chairs in Antarctica to a classroom that is made from sustainable materials and benefits wildlife, the girls prototyped 13 inventions for the classrooms of the future. The best part? Seeing our participants’ faces sparkle with curiosity and wonder! Even the food matched the colourful vibrancy and wonder of the day – why eat a plain burger when you can have a rainbow one? (Seriously, this blew our minds of what’s possible and check it out for yourself in the photos below!)

International Women’s Day at the g4g Atelier in Brussels, March 8

As part of our International Women’s Day celebration, we welcomed old and new friends to talk about some special news, and our office is now a flurry with ideas, reinforcing for us that #AnythingisPossible when we work together. With such an incredible community behind us, our #g4gMoonshot is most definitely in reach, and we're well on our way to inspiring 50K girls in 2023!

International Women’s Day around the world, March 7 & 8

We filled our gratitude cup with International Women’s Day invites to celebrate with employees across 13 time zones from three incredible companies, each committed to seeing a more balanced and equitable world. First, on March 7, we were honoured to be recognised alongside 22 female responsible solvers as part of Ashland’s Women’s International Network, and share about our mutual vision and partnership to activate the next generation of female STEM leaders. Then, on March 8, our team was privileged to speak with hundreds of employees at Sweep and Cummins, and share how their employees of all gender expressions can help #EmbraceEquity and become role models for their future colleagues.

g4g STEM Exploratoria with the Avantor Foundation in Barcelona, March 23

We invited more than 80 girls and their teachers to explore and discover science while designing and prototyping fun inventions at our g4g STEM Exploratoria in Barcelona in partnership with the Avantor Foundation. Their creative process was inspired by DNA and fruit battery experiments to navigate the topics of the future of genetics and renewable energy, and they explored the basics of engineering through the construction of a spaghetti tower. The result? A high-tech fish-shaped submarine that can explore the deep sea, a jellyfish drone, a rover for the exploration of Mars, and much more! We were blown away by all the creativity and out of the box thinking that these young female STEM adventurers brought to the table, with one team walking away with the grand prize for the most outstanding idea!

g4g Broadcast: Science, you had me at hello® on Connectivity with Vodafone and WWT, March 28

And to close out Women’s History Month, we hosted the 26th episode of our Broadcast, Science, you had me at hello®, welcoming students from Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and Germany, and our incredible speakers, Priscila, Kate, and Veronika from Vodafone and World Wide Technology. We explored the connectivity of all systems, from technology to biology to friendships and beyond, and engaged in incredible conversations about the metaverse, solving challenges with our team members, and exploring new tools that will change the way we go about our daily lives. And we learned just how connected we all are, even in the most unexpected ways — did you know that all humans share 99.9% of our DNA? And yet we are all unique!

So, what’s next? Stay tuned to hear more about our upcoming events in England, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy, the US, and so many more in the months to come!

Thank you to all of the donors who contributed to our recent "Little by Little" campaign to inspire 1500 girls in STEM! It is just the beginning of making our #g4gMoonshot to inspire 50K girls a reality, and we are enormously grateful to everyone who is constantly supporting our efforts to inspire the next generation of female scientists.

All the best,

The g4g team
