Exploding Science & Tech Discovery for 1000+ Girls

Exploring virtual reality at Nokia in Madrid
Exploring virtual reality at Nokia in Madrid

How did greenlight for girls start 2019? With a BIG chemical reaction combining hydrogen peroxide with potassium iodide as a reagent, of course!! And with a BIG thank you to all of our generous supporters who have helped us gear up to inspire even more girls in science & technology this year!

Kicking off the new year, we had the chance to showcase explosive fun in chemistry with the famous Elephant’s Toothpaste experiment to 80 kids aged 5-12 at the British Junior Academy of Brussels as part of their STEM week. We had lots of hands-on fun creating lava lamps, polymer worms, magic milk, and bath bombs – with one girl writing us the sweetest note saying, “thank you for showing me how to make slime and inspiring us – I think I might be a scientist!”

These past few months have taken us from Brussels to India and from France to Spain, allowing us to reach over 1000 more young minds! In December, we teamed up with Covestro for the last leg of our STEM Festival in Goa and Nagpur, India to reach more than 800 young girls, and together, shared how science & technology can open doors to any career they imagine.

In France, we worked with Stanley Black & Decker for our first g4g@work in Damparis with 30 kids who engineered sculptures using chocolate, extracted their own DNA, learned about circuitry while building their own drawing robots, and tested their strength and knowledge with power tools.

We also worked with Nokia at their premises in Madrid where we welcomed 100 curious girls aged 10-15 to make explosive bath bombs, learn about plasma physics, and engineer fruit batteries. They even challenged the Nokia team at Pictionary… in a virtual reality world! The girls had a chance to hear encouraging messages from Francisco Polo, State Secretary for the digital matters and Alicia Richart, General Director of digitalES to start their day.

Finally, wrapping up December meant innovating with 20 kids on smart homes & sustainability… and then applying delicious edible ingredients to building a prototype based on those themes!

To all of our donors, thank you for all your support in 2018 and for helping us grow more and more everyday. And speaking of growing – we are happy to share where we will be next!

Coming up next month, we are excited to inspire girls in STEM in Brussels, Mexico City, and Birmingham, UK. On March 6th, we are launching our first g4g@work event with Solvay in Brussels, where we will welcome 50 girls for a full day of STEM discovery. They will have the chance to see inside Solvay’s labs on batteries & reverse engineering, learn all about what you can do with bicarbonate (which is A LOT), dive into M&M Statistics, and have fun in biology, tech, and more with the XperiLab – experiments in high-tech bus!

On March 9th, we are thrilled to be back in Mexico City with our global partner, Cisco and 150 girls from the local community for a day of science fun with Lego workshops, coding, mandala yoga, and more!

Finally, on March 27th, we are heading to the UK for our first g4g Day @Birmingham with Covestro at Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum! Inviting 100 girls, we are excited to show them all the fun aspects to STEM and how science IS everywhere around us.

Stay tuned and we look forward to sharing more with you soon!
