Just a weeks ago, refugee girls were invited to attend our event in Athens, Greece. At the beginning of the day, the girls stood together in a group, staying close to their translator. Yet, as they started decorating their labcoat – and as other girls came over to ask them to sign their labcoats – you could see them start to open up, laugh, and become more engaged and quietly confident.
During the opening ceremony, the girls looked at each other in excitement as they understood that our keynote speaker was a female entreupreuner and benefactor who came to Greece as a refugee when she was young – just like them. When it was time for our speaker to take questions, the refugee girls quickly stood up in front of 100 other girls in order to ask about her experiences. And by the end of the day, the girls were not only discovering the fun in science during workshops ranging from coding to statistics, but also able to reimagine new possibilities for their own future.
We aim to inspire those key moments of engagement, inspiration, and imagination at every event. It has been with all your dedicated support that we have been able to make those moments possible for more than 1000 girls these past few months - from Poland to India, Greece to the United States, and Brazil to the United Kingdom - connecting them to science and the everyday in interactive and fun ways! A thank you message shared from a parent after our event at Oxford University last week, is another reminder of all the incredible ways your support helps to inspire girls: “You have created wonderful memories that they will treasure for a lifetime…I do not think you should underestimate the impact this day will have, seeing strong successful women in the STEM fields is so important and valuable."
