It is amazing how much of a pregnant mare’s resources can go into a growing fetus, even when they themselves are starving. Ms. Sorbet, a five-year-old mare, arrived from a Clark County Neglect Case only four days before giving birth. Because of her condition, she was taken straight to the veterinarian hospital where she could be closely monitored before, during and after foaling. Fortunately, we avoided any major complications and a beautiful filly we named Gelato arrived.
The first few days of nursing Gelato were rough. Sorbet was so malnourished that we had to have her on a restricted diet that only slowly increased her feed intake. That made milk production difficult, but everyone made it through. Now, with support from donors like you, both Sorbet and Gelato are doing marvelous. Now that she can be on free choice alfalfa and grain supplement, Sorbet is able to keep up with Gelatos milk demands and gaining weight and energy.
Your donations help ensure that we can be there when horses like this need us the most. All one-time donations raised on GlobalGiving during the month of June will go straight to care for Sorbet and Gelatos continued recovery. What a wonderful summer we hope to give them!
