Tilly, a 4-year-old Quarter Horse mare, came to us after we helped round up and place a herd of 230 untouched horses in 2020. Even from afar we could tell something was wrong with one side of her face, but we could not get close enough to tell what was happening. After all the other horses had found homes, little Tilly remained, we knew we needed to bring her home and give her a chance.
Once halter broke, we discovered Tilly was dealing with chronic nerve damage to the left side of her face. Her left eyelid was not able to close, she suffered from muscle spasms and had a droopy lip. The injury, that likely occurred years ago, had resulted in significant damage to her eyeball. Tilly was also pregnant, which made it impossible to give her medication for the spasms or remove her eyeball, without harming her unborn foal.
After weaning her foal, getting her spasms under control with daily medication and removing her damaged eye, Tilly is now feeling great! We did not realize how much pain her eye was causing her until after her surgery. She is now much more curious, outgoing, and spunky. Tilly is now in training to learn how to navigate life with one eye and how to become riding horse. So far, nothing is slowing this young redhead down!
