She's not a giraffe but pregnant ponies count too!

The last 30 days have brought 7 horses to our door needing help.  One of those horses was a little pregnant Indian Reservation mare named Gisele.  She came to us along with 2 other horses from what we call “The Superbowl Rescue”.  On the day of the Superbowl, we were contacted by an adult son caring for his mother’s horses while she was out of the area.  He has distraught as he described finding a dead new foal that morning.  He explained that his mother was a hoarder and that 3 horses had been living in a 24’ x 24’ uncovered area for the past 3 years.  No one was aware that either of the mares were pregnant.

When we arrived we found the horses in a mucky, wet area and the foal dead and very cold on the ground.  Its mom, who we now call Lady Gaga, was underweight and lethargic. Also in the pen where two pony sized horses that we were told his mother had “rescued” as foals from the Indian reservation only to end up in a tiny enclosure.  We named these horses Brady and Gisele.

Lady Gaga ended up staying at our veterinarian’s office for a week.  Her uterus was badly infected and required daily flushes.  Brady was castrated and little pregnant Gaga was ultrasounded and estimated to be approximately 9 to 10 months in foal.

Little Giselle stands under 14 hands, is sweet as can be and has a belly that is exploding.  We estimate that she and her foal will be under our care for at least the next 5 to 7 months.  Once Gisele has foaled we will wait until the baby is about 5 months old to wean it.  Once that happens, Gisele will come into the training barn to give her a wonderful start as a ridding pony.  Hopefully that training will make her adoptable and safe for the rest of her life.   It just takes time, love and money.
