Supporting Elderly in Goma

Context and Justification:
In Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, many elderly people live in extreme poverty and isolation. Numerous seniors are abandoned by their families and marginalized by society. They face severe loneliness, malnutrition, untreated illnesses, and some are even accused of witchcraft. Daily survival is uncertain, and their dignity is often compromised.

Project Objectives:
The Give Hope to 70 Vulnerable Elderly project aims to:

  • Provide direct financial support to 70 elderly individuals to cover essential needs such as food, medicine, and healthcare.
  • Offer emotional and social support to reduce isolation and loneliness.
  • Raise community awareness on the rights and dignity of older adults to foster a more inclusive and respectful environment.

Planned Activities:

  • Monthly financial aid distribution to the 70 beneficiaries.
  • Organizing listening sessions and community gatherings to build a support network.
  • Identifying and training facilitators and volunteers to ensure regular follow-up.
  • Collaborating with GlobalGiving to raise additional funds and guarantee the project’s goals are met.

Timeline:

  • Preparation and beneficiary identification phase: Ongoing.
  • Official project launch: November 2025.

Budget:

  • Total project budget: $7,540
  • Amount raised so far via GlobalGiving: $340
  • Goal: Complete funding to implement the project fully.

Expected Impact:

  • Significant improvement in the quality of life for the 70 targeted elderly individuals.
  • Reduction of loneliness and social isolation.
  • Increased community awareness on respecting and valuing older adults.
