We have ended the year 2021

By Maria Elizabeth Barreto | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE EL ARENAL FOUNDATION

We have ended the year 2021 with the joy of fulfilled duty, since the children and their families tell us that their life is different since they are in the foundation, that they feel that "we are a family" and that we are looking after them, that when they have a problem they can come to entrust it to us and this is really the true meaning of the institution.
Since November, the children and adolescents have been attending the institution on a daily basis as usual, we are doing it this way because we believe it is the most appropriate way to accompany our population. However, each group is divided into two parts so as not to violate the biosecurity rules. The first part of the group attends from 14:00 to 16:00 hours and the second part of each group attends from 16:00 to 18:00 hours.
We have also noticed that there is a certain openness in the educational establishments towards children who need curricular adaptations and this is very positive. In this way the accompaniment that we do from the foundation is better. Being involved: parents, educational institutions and us gives better results in favor of the best performance of the children.
We are concerned about the nutrition of the children and we are attending daily with snacks that are served in small groups after the work day. For the families we prepare 2 days a week a pot of nutritious soup that is distributed among 12-14 families at a time. They come bringing a container and take it home to serve themselves and their children.
The month of December was really festive, our "Christmas Day" was celebrated in the park in front of the institution and it was very cheerful and colorful, we had a Santa Claus who brought tinsel for the children. There were also games, representations of each group and the moms also danced in folkloric dances. In addition, generous people brought bags of candy for the children and food for the preparation of their snacks.
The idea is to have created a space for the participants to have a friendly place to share their worries, sorrows and joys, and at the same time to take the prepared bread home to their families.
The literacy process was suspended because we did not have the funding for it ... .
This is what I can share of the experiences of these last months in the institution.
