Music has “brought joy” to 3rd Grader Janice. Being a part of music class in school has helped nurture a “special love for music” that she’s had since she was very young, says her mother, Judith.
Judith has noticed how studying music has impacted Janice’s growth; she “socializes easier with her peers” and her “listening skills are more sharpened.” She explains, “Learning music has taught Janice to be very creative. She listens to a song once and she can already harmonize with it. It helps her to be a fast learner and [to] be very attentive, since she always wants to sing correctly.”
Janice has faced major challenges and turmoil at home which have resulted in feelings of abandonment. But music has helped her cope. Her mother confides, “I have personally witnessed that all music activities keep her happy, jovial, and make her forget her plight.” When she comes home from school, “the only teacher she talks about is Mr. Carney, her music teacher.”
Janice shares, “Learning about music is awesome because it shows how one can express their feelings through music. It has taught me that I can communicate through music.”
Thanks to supporters like you, Janice has been able to find solace and self-expression through music.
Janice’s mother believes in the importance of music education for all children. “Music enhances listening, social, and cognitive skills. Music is involving and creates the spirit of teamwork. Music is entertaining and healing to broken hearts. Music is a way of communication.”

In our upcoming 14th year of programming, your support will help us close the gap for low-income area schools that are still deprived of yearlong music and arts programs (LA Arts Ed Profile, Dec. 2017). Help increase our impact by expanding quality sequential music education to 42 schools and 17,500 children across six Los Angeles County districts next school year. Also, your contribution will help us offer over 100 hours of top-notch training for music educators and over 420 combined hours of guidance for schools across Los Angeles County in our commitment to building long-term sustainable music programs.
Thank you to those who have generously given to help provide key music education services to disadvantaged schools and to students like Janice.
